Default farming: what to do with my haul?

I'm farming.... with a kinda non-specific goal of just making some
money and maybe gathering some materials....

Should I sell drops to merchants, salvage for materials and upgrades
and then sell the materials and upgrades, trade stuff to collectors
and sell what they give me or...? Are the components of an item
worth more than the item itself?

Selling to players seems to take FOREVER on most items and that is
even more boring than farming.... Is there a better approach to selling
to other players quickly? I know the places like Lion's Arch and Ascalon
are good trading centers but without good info it's hard to know value
of items that I have no experience with ( weapons and upgrades for
professions I have not played much with for example )

Just looking for BASIC advice on maximizing my profit without putting
lots and lots of research time on it..... I know that the more I know
the more I can make. I'm just looking for a way to use my time wisely.

Price Check everything you get. Then decide if the extra money from selling to people instead of the merchant is worth your time or not.

I made a guide sometime ago that tackles this exact issue, read it over and it will give you some insight while making some extra cash.

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10316313

power trading as many peeps reference too its basically buying something for a low price and selling it for a sizable profit. For instance I bought a ded Kunnagang mini pet for 60k in KC and immediately sold it in Kamadan for 80k.

hope that helps,

~Cheers

Yeah, the power trading is nice if you want to be a stock-broker instead of playing the game. How about I just go play WoW or Ultima and be a fisherman?

Your best bet without trying to play the market is probably to find out what weapons/mods are worth anything, and merch anything else. For example, perfect sundering and fortitude mods will usually net you about 5-7k ea, so anything that is less that that can go to a merchant. Same goes for rare skins if you are farming somewhere cool like UW or FoW, or even hard to get greens.

Money can be made off smaller items that are worth 1k or so, but I think spamming chat for anything less than 5k is a waste of time. Also, if you have a few high demand items in storage or on a mule, you can quickly respond to people asking. You won't make the huge money the power traders will, but you will get to play the game without having to research what the going price for a ded hornswaggle is on each continent.

EDIT: I checked out the trading guide. Kind of obvious, but useful. If you have a mule account, you can still play while spamming trade. That would be your best bet. To maximize it, you would have to buy all three accounts for your mule though

save some green and all gold and sell everything else
to the merchants?

other items...... are they worth more as the item
or as the materials salvaged from them...?
( of course that will vary based on the item but just
as a general rule of thumb...? )

Any item that would nto sell for at least 10g is less expensive
than the salvage kit use to salvage it so is slavaging it a waste
of money?

I'm sure there are guides available somewhere, but I'll go over some of the basics I know of.

Identify everything that is blue, purple, or gold. These are items that will have magical components of some sort on them. For weapons, these may be mods you can extract and sell to other players and for armor it may be a rune or inscription you can use or sell. White items will not have any magical component on them. However, anything you ID will have more value when selling it to a Merchant. So white items that will have no value to other players, and nothing to salvage for sale can be IDed to increase the value they have at the Merchant. The cost of the ID may be more than the increase in the value though, so you don't want to ID EVERY white, as you will lose money on ID kits. Good rule of thumb is to only ID max items. If you don't know what max is for weapons, then look them up and remember them.

Materials are a good way to make money. Some monsters drop materials by themselves, but most materials come from salvaging other items that drop. Not all materials are worth trying to make money with though, so use the Material Trader and the Rare Material Trader to learn which will make money. Also learn what each material salvages from. If you want Iron, you won't be salvaging a bow to get it, but some materials come from unexpected sources. Once you learn what materials can make you easy money, learn what will get you those materials. The great thing about materials is you can sell them to the Traders, but you can also sell them to other players. People buying armor will often buy materials in bulk, and for more than the Traders buy it from you for. Typically you can sell a material for a value half way between the sell and buy prices of the Material Trader. Materials that are used frequently will be easier to sell, and get you more for the same amount. For instance, a stack (250) of Cloth will only sell for about 1-2k, while a stack of Feathers will sell for 7-8k.

Since you are new, I would not worry about Power Trading. You need to have a very firm concept of the market for specific items so you buy at low prices and CAN sell at high prices. Until you have a better grasp of the market in the game, don't bother trying this. It also usually deals with purchases of LARGE amounts, exceeding the 100k mark.

ID your white drops to increase their value and merch them. You can also sell 7 unidentified golds for 5k to players working on their Wisdom titles. Both are common knowledge, but not everybody knows about them.

Materials the ones that make the con sets ,iron , glitter dust feathers and bone are easy sales.
Mods fortitude , armor penetration , enchanted ,some shield and focus inscriptions like luck of the draw and forget me not are easy sales.
Weapons can be sold as unidents if your not going for your wisdom title, but its always worth id-ing req 9s never know could be perfect which would make it worth more the 700g and sellable.
